Name: Nile Freeman
Door: Door Pass - Submissive

Canon: The Old Guard
Canon Point: Six months after end of the movie

Age: 26 (both mental + physical)
Appearance: Nile

History: Nile was born in 1994. She grew up on Chicago's Southside with her mom and brother after her father was killed in combat during service in the Marines. Not long after graduating high school, Nile joined the marines to follow in her father's footsteps, and reached the rank of Corporal. Eventually the plan was to use her GI benefits to attend college - perhaps to study art history.

While in the Corps she served in Afghanistan, working with a unit to find insurgents hiding in villages. One on mission, she is sent in to address the women and finds their mark is hiding in one of the homes, using the women as a shield. During the subsequent engagement, she shoots the insurgent. While she works to keep him from dying, he uses a previously hidden knife to slit her throat. She bleeds out while her friends try to keep her alive. Then she wakes up without so much as a scratch. Not long after she's released from medical, she finds out she's being reassigned to Germany. This plan is foiled by the arrival of one Andromache of Scythia who kidnaps her and proceeds to give her a very down and dirty introduction to the realm of being a newly minted immortal.

From there, she meets the rest of the team: Nicky and Joe (immortal lovers since the Crusades) and Booker (alcoholic frenchman) and then must rescue said team from Merrick pharmaceuticals after Booker's betrayal. The price of the betrayal is 100 year isolation for Booker, and Nile plans to spend the next rest of forever trying to do the right thing for people who need it as long as she can.

Personality
:
  • Loyal: Nile is nothing if not loyal, and once earned her loyalty is not easily shaken. Despite a rocky start with Andy and the other immortals, at the first sign that Andy might be hurt/taken advantage of, she literally wades face-first into death to get her back. This trait is also echoed in her service to the Marines to honor her father's legacy and in her defense of Booker; she's the only one on the team that wants to let him off with only an apology.
  • Seeking: Perhaps a better fit than idealistic: Nile is a searcher. She wants to know her place in the world. She wants to know why things are happening to her and why they're happening now: what is her place in the larger world and what part does she play in making it a little better than it was before? This is what leads to her faith, and her acceptance of her place among the immortals. Once she sees the good they do, she can't turn away from the calling. It may be a curse or a gift, but she sees the difference Andy and the others have made in the world, and she can't help but want to be a part of that something larger.
  • Brash: Nile is not one to mince words or hash out actions with the entire team. She does not wait patiently, she does not sit well with orders she doesn't agree with. When told to 'wait for the signal' she spends the entire time yelling at Booker to hurry up so they can get things done. She bosses Andy around, despite Andy having a couple thousand years on her, and only backs down when Andy makes the boundaries clear. Nile is the definition of "testing the depth of the river with both feet". Once she has orders and/or decides to do something she does it all in, with little discussion about 'plans' or 'waiting for backup'.
  • Stubborn: Tied in with her brash attitude, Nile is a stubborn cookie. When she thinks she's got the right idea, she is not quick to move away from her position. She is also not afraid to establish that someone disagreeing with her position is "bullshit" and she will, quite literally, fight to maintain her current position. It takes literally being shot in the head, a fistfight, a broken ankle and watching her arm bone heal after poking out of her skin for her to accept that maybe Andy's kind of right about things not being normal. Stubborn cookie. For the record: this applies to Booker as well -- and I doubt her ability to respect full isolation despite her team's opinion on the matter.
  • Resentful: While it may not define her as much as her stubbornness and her brashness, there is a part of Nile that resents her immortality and the changes in her life. She resents that she's been taken from her family, that she didn't get a chance to consent, that choices were taken away from her. It nearly leads to her breaking away from the group, and without her loyalty overriding it at the chance Andy might be hurt she would have returned to her "civilian" life--feeling entitled to the time she had left with her family. She's working to overcome it, but it is not completely gone. The lack of choice is what she resents the most--the issue is that she didn't ask for any of it, and it is, in a word, "bullshit"

Powers and Abilities:
  • Immortality (to a degree--it runs out after a couple thousand years, somewhat unpredictably)
  • Marine combat training
  • Training in firearms and hand to hand combat
  • Training and familiarity with knife fighting
  • Familiarity with complicated modern technology, understands the logistics of hacking, but doesn't personally have hacking experience
  • Familiarity with art history/ability to identify works of art on sight
  • Psychic (ish??) connection with the immortal Quyhn who she hasn't met - though this mostly consists of nightmares of Quyhn drowning repeatedly at the bottom of the ocean.
