When Nile was ten, her father died during active service in the Marine Corps. Her mother suddenly became a single parent on the southside of Chicago and she saw the thousands of way it could have gone wrong for them, but saw her mother’s strength in making sure she and her younger brother stayed on the straight and narrow. It also left her with the need to follow in her father’s footsteps, to fulfill the legacy he left for her (for them) in the Marines. These ideals of protectiveness and legacy, sunk in deep and sunk in early.

When Nile graduated high school she enrolled in the marines with the goal of eventually going to art school. The marines gave her purpose, training and what she thought would be direction in her life. She bonded with her bunk mates (Jay and Dizzy) and thought she had found the extended family she grew up hearing stories about.

At 26 and serving in Afghanistan, Nile infiltrated a home where an insurgent was hiding. Out of training and instinct, she shot him. While trying to provide CPR and save his life after her shot, he used a hidden knife to slit her throat. She bled out in Dizzy’s arms and woke up after in the military infirmary without so much as a scar. It results in her unit packing her things and kicking her out, and the Marines planning to send her to Germany for more testing. Losing the marines sends her adrift and looking for a purpose.

Meeting Andy, Booker, Joe and Nicky – her fellow immortals – gives her an idea of what her life is going to become. It makes her feel slightly less alone in a future she can't predict. She’s torn between the family she knows and the promise of family this group gives her and the idea of a larger purpose in trying to make the world a better place.

Nile makes a choice after she’s left Andy and Booker on their rescue mission and she finds out about Booker’s betrayal: she actively chooses her new life over returning to her family. She knows what she will be giving up, but chooses to do it anyway, picking the purpose of the Guard over her own happiness. It also leads to her discovery that Andy's immortality has run out, driving her into protectiveness and into the idea that she'll eventually take over Andy's leadership role.
